Smart Reporting, the Munich-based startup specializing in AI-powered medical reporting, has acquired the US company Fluency for Imaging. The merger creates Jacobian, an internationally operating healthtech company with headquarters in Munich and Pittsburgh. Jacobian positions itself as a pioneer in integrating AI into radiology – with the goal of relieving professionals and improving the quality of diagnostic reports globally.
Founded in 2014 by radiologists, Smart Reporting develops software solutions that combine medical knowledge with AI. The technology enables standardized, automated reports based on clinical guidelines and simultaneously provides data for research and quality assurance. Fluency for Imaging is one of the leading providers in the field of speech recognition and radiological workflow management. The platform has been awarded the “Best in KLAS Award” multiple times and processes over 80 million reports annually. Together, both companies now form one of the largest provider groups worldwide – market leader in Australia and number two in the US and Canada.
Integrated AI solutions for radiology
Jacobian combines Fluency for Imaging’s speech recognition with Smart Reporting’s structured, AI-powered reporting into a unified platform. It optimizes workflows, improves report quality, and relieves radiologists in their daily clinical work. The goal is to connect fragmented systems and responsibly bring artificial intelligence into practice. With new investments and an internationally experienced team, data-driven diagnostics will be advanced globally.
Wieland Sommer, founder and CEO of Smart Reporting, explains:
“With targeted investments, a clear focus on diagnostic imaging, and an exceptional leadership team, Jacobian is ready to write the next chapter in Fluency for Imaging’s innovation story. We will expand FFI’s strong market position by seamlessly integrating cutting-edge generative AI into the proven platform. Our goal is to enable radiologists to work faster, more precisely, and consistently – without interruptions and with a clear focus on their medical expertise.”
Russ Cardwell, VP of Sales US at Fluency for Imaging, also sees the merger as an important step:
“This will take our deep, customer-focused commitment to the next level and enable faster innovation. Jacobian is focused on enabling radiologists to work successfully and promote diagnostic excellence for every patient by improving the speed and consistency of report generation without compromising on quality.”
Global presence and official launch at RSNA
Jacobian is establishing itself globally and serves customers in North America, Europe, and Australia. The official launch will take place at RSNA 2025, the world’s largest radiology conference, which will be held in Chicago from November 30 to December 4. There, the new company will make its first joint appearance and present product innovations and partnerships.
The acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2025.
