Between growth and realism
Even in 2025, the mood in the venture capital market remained cautious worldwide and in Germany. However, Munich-based startups held their own, securing strong funding rounds, particularly in the deep tech, life sciences, and cybersecurity sectors. Munich's startup scene and the city itself continue to strengthen their position among the leading startup hubs in Germany and beyond.
However, not all developments were linear upwards: bankruptcies of individual startups and stricter requirements for sustainable business models have shown that the environment is becoming more professional and startups are adapting their strategies even more closely to real economic parameters.

A community's balance sheet
Munich's startup ecosystem once again demonstrated its resilience in 2025. Among the positive developments was the continued high level of activity in the financing market: Munich is and remains one of the most important startup locations in Germany. Technology-driven startups, particularly those in the fields of artificial intelligence, deep tech, life sciences, and defense, were able to attract investors. At the same time, the scene proved to be well-connected – events, programs, and formats fostered visibility, exchange, and new collaborations. The ecosystem was also perceived as more diverse, professional, and international in terms of content.
The paradigm shift in security policy in Europe has clearly demonstrated the relevance of technological innovations in the defense and security context. Munich-based startups like Helsing and Quantum Systems exemplify a sector that was long marginalized but has now moved to the center of political, social, and economic debates. Both companies have become key players at the intersection of software, artificial intelligence, sensor technology, and military applications, further enhancing Munich's prominence as a business location.
Investment remained selective, with business models being scrutinized more closely, particularly in the early stages. Some startups had to adjust their growth plans, and funding rounds were delayed or never materialized. Bankruptcies and restructurings made it clear that the market was continuing to consolidate and that economic sustainability was becoming a greater focus. For example, the patents of Lilium The company has now been definitively sold. The pressure to quickly generate sustainable revenue increased, as did the demands placed on founders, teams, and strategies. Overall, the ecosystem was in transition: less hype, more realism, but with a stable foundation for long-term development.
