Hypersonica: Hypersonics to Series A

The British-German startup Hypersonica has secured €23.3 million in funding and completed its first hypersonic test flight. Based in the Munich region, the team is driving the development of European hypersonic capability.

Hypersonica is dedicated to the defense of Europe using hypersonic missiles and has announced two milestones along the way: a €23.3 million Series A funding round and the successful first hypersonic test flight. Founded in 2023, the company is based in Wessling, Germany, and operates a wholly-owned subsidiary in London. Initially, the company supported the TUM Venture Labs the startup.

Plural led the funding round. The Federal Agency for Groundbreaking Innovations (Sprind) and existing investors General Catalyst and 201 Ventures also participated. With the new capital, Hypersonica is accelerating its roadmap and plans to begin full flight tests in the first quarter of 2026. The company aims to address the demand from NATO member states for high-precision attack capabilities.

The two Hypersonica founders Philipp Kerth, CEO, and Marc Ewenz, CTO, explain:

"Europe is at a crucial juncture where speed in defense innovation is no longer optional, but essential. Our mission is clear: to equip Europe with the technological edge it needs and wants to defend itself against military aggression with maneuverable hypersonic systems and to protect the democratic values that unite our societies."

Rafael Laguna de la Vera, Director of Sprind, says:

“Sprind has a proven track record of bridging the gap for groundbreaking technologies from the lab to production. Our decision to invest in Hypersonica reflects our confidence in the exceptionally strong team and the steady progress it is making in the challenging physics of hypersonic flight – a capability that will contribute to Europe’s defense autonomy while laying the foundation for future autonomous access to space. By investing early in strategically important innovations as a government entity, we are demonstrating public sector support and catalyzing the flow of private capital and industrial partnerships.”

Step-by-step to operational readiness

Hypersonica completed its first hypersonic test flight at Andøya Space in Norway. It is the first privately funded European hypersonic test flight. defense companies The team thus achieved this technological milestone. The prototype accelerated to over Mach 6, or more than 7,400 kilometers per hour, and achieved a range of over 300 kilometers.

Hypersonica aims to develop a hypersonic attack capability by 2029. To achieve this, the team is pursuing a phased approach with successive test flights. Within nine months, the startup completed the concept, design, procurement, integration, and ground testing, as well as export control, regulatory requirements, flight safety, and range management.
