Custom Surgical has closed a €3.5 million pre-Series A financing round. Ventech led the round, with Zeiss and a group of existing and new investors also participating. Zeiss's participation sends a key signal. In addition to capital, the leading optics and medical technology company contributes expertise, global reach, and experience in ophthalmology and precision optics.
Digital continuity for medical practices and clinics
Analog hardware tools and fragmented documentation processes still dominate daily practice in ophthalmological care. Custom Surgical addresses this by developing hardware-independent digitization solutions that can be integrated into existing clinical environments. Practices and hospitals can upgrade existing slit lamps and surgical microscopes to capture high-quality image data without having to replace core equipment or change established workflows.
The focus is on the cloud-based platform. Microrec ConnectIt manages ophthalmological data across devices and manufacturers, enabling the secure capture, storage, and structuring of images and videos. At the same time, the platform supports patient documentation and optimized clinical workflows.
Custom Surgical views Microrec Connect not as a traditional image archive, but as a unifying digital platform for ophthalmology. The solution connects examinations, procedures, and follow-up care over extended periods, creating the foundation for more efficient collaboration and data-driven healthcare.
Step by step towards AI-supported care
The Pursue It follows a clear three-step approach: first digitize, then standardize, and finally introduce AI applications. This approach aims to lower the barriers to entry for hospitals and ensure that future AI tools are based on real clinical workflows. The Custom Surgical is already preparing AI-based support functions, such as improving image acquisition quality, triage, and optimizing referral pathways. Physicians retain full control throughout.
“Global demand for eye treatments is growing so rapidly that current clinical processes can no longer keep pace. Scalable digital workflows are essential to enable fast and accurate preventative screening for a growing and aging global population. This funding validates our long-term vision: first building the data foundation and then unlocking the clinical and economic value of AI. We are proud to be working with Ventech, Zeiss, and our investors on our global expansion.”
says Federico Acosta, CEO of Custom Surgical.
