Munich Startup: What does your startup do? What problem do you solve?
Newsense: Newsense is committed to maximizing the safety of people and critical infrastructure while requiring fewer resources. It may sound absurd at first: increasing challenges with fewer resources. Newsense achieves this by developing AI-supported and model-based safety systems based on the principles of autonomous driving. Newsense's product increases the level of automation in safety services and reduces manual effort: seamless 360-degree monitoring, highly accurate detection of hazardous situations, a comprehensive 3D situational awareness picture through the integration of sensor data, and automated control of systems.
Munich Startup: But that's been around for a long time!
Newsense: The current state of security technology is very mechanical. Thicker and higher walls and fences, high-resolution CCTV cameras, and motion detectors have heavily influenced security technology. Artificial intelligence, digital twins, 3D laser sensors, and networked devices (IoT), developed for example in the field of autonomous driving, are hardly used for security applications so far. Newsense is seizing this opportunity and wants to... Security technology to take it to the next level.
Technology from the automotive industry
Munich Startup: What is your founding story?
Newsense: The two founders have years of experience in the automotive industry. Their focus has always been on making vehicles so intelligent, using sensors and AI software, that they can understand their surroundings and move autonomously. With this passion for intelligent autonomous systems, we've turned our attention to protecting people and critical infrastructure. A perfect fit! This new mission – creating greater safety for citizens and better protecting critical infrastructure – continues to motivate us.
Munich Startup: What have been your biggest challenges so far?
Newsense: We constantly faced new challenges. In retrospect, the biggest one was the mutual understanding needed to solve a problem. As a manufacturer, we are enthusiastic about the technology. Our customer doesn't want a mere promise, but a reliable solution that doesn't yet exist on the market and is developed by a Startup was developed. How can you quickly bring a first-of-its-kind solution to a high level of product maturity in real-world use within a short testing phase? We're glad we managed to do it. We had many sleepless nights along the way.
The security industry is a referral business.
Munich Startup: How are things going?
Newsense: Business is growing steadily. We've learned that there's no room for error in security applications. That's why it's important for us to bring our products to market step by step. We're pleased that we regularly gain new customers through referrals. Our next step will be to further expand our business across Europe and serve international customers from our Bavarian base.
Munich Startup: How have you experienced Munich as a startup location so far?
Newsense: Munich is a vibrant startup hub with enormous potential. Numerous funding programs and incubators support founders in achieving a successful launch. Even more importantly, Munich boasts a diverse range of industrial companies that assist startups in achieving product-market fit. Building a startup from your own garage is impressive – but launching directly from within the user environment is even more rewarding. This is an opportunity you shouldn't miss!
Munich Startup: Hidden champion or shooting star?
Newsense: Hidden champion. Our mission to protect people and critical infrastructure gives us tremendous support. We cherish the moments when a major event runs smoothly and safely with our support, when security incidents are detected early and appropriate measures are taken to prevent greater damage. That's the best kind of recognition for us.
