Europe is working intensively to expand its capabilities in space. With Nyx, it is developing The Exploration Company One of the continent's most ambitious private space projects. The now successfully completed parachute test addresses one of the greatest technical challenges of any space mission: the safe return to Earth.
Critical test for the return from space
The test took place on May 19th in the Mojave Desert in California. A specially developed Drop Test Vehicle (DTV) was used, which replicates the mass, aerodynamics and key structural properties of the later Nyx capsule.
A helicopter lifted the test vehicle to an altitude of approximately 9,100 feet, or about 2.8 kilometers. After the drop, a drogue parachute system was initially activated, stabilizing and slowing the vehicle. This was followed by the deployment of the main parachutes, which are responsible for the controlled descent.
This transition is considered particularly challenging. The parachutes must be deployed precisely under high stress while the spacecraft remains stable.
All test objectives achieved
According to The Exploration Company The entire test sequence was successful. The parachutes opened as planned, the timing met expectations, and the measured flight data was within the predicted values.
The company is collaborating with Airborne Systems on the system's development. This specialist in parachute and rescue technologies has decades of experience in aerospace programs.
The data obtained will now be used to further qualify the return system and support the preparation of upcoming development and flight tests.
Nyx is intended to make Europe's space travel more independent
The successful test is not only significant for The Exploration Company. Europe currently has limited capabilities for autonomously returning payloads from orbit after a mission. Consequently, there is considerable interest in private space companies that could close this technological gap.
Founded in 2021, the startup Nyx aims to develop a reusable spacecraft for transporting cargo and, in the long term, astronauts. The capsule is intended to serve various missions and strengthen Europe's independence in the field of space transportation. Each successfully completed test increases the program's technical maturity and reduces risks on the path to future missions.
Demonstration flight planned for 2028
Further tests and qualification steps are necessary before the planned demonstration flight. However, the parachute test that has now been completed is one of the key pieces of evidence for the safety and reliability of the return system.
For The Exploration Company, this success therefore marks far more than a technical milestone. It demonstrates that the company is on track to achieve its goal of... European alternative building up for space transport and return missions is getting closer.
