2. Biotech Press Lounge at the IZB

On 12 July 2016, the Innovation and Start-up Center for Biotechnology (IZB) in cooperation with the Bavarian Biotechnology Cluster (BioM) the second Biotech Press Lounge in the Faculty Club G2B (Gateway to Biotech).

100 guests, consisting of representatives from biotech and pharmaceutical companies, venture capital firms, communications agencies and the press, came to exchange views on the latest developments and current figures in the industry. Bert Fröndhoff, Head of Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals at Handelsblatt, moderated the keynote speeches by the top-class speakers.

Dr. Peter Zobel, Managing Director of the IZB, opened the event and introduced the five startup companies that moved into the IZB Innovation and Business Start-up Center in 2016. He congratulated Avergen Pharmaceuticals GmbH, the Bicoll GmbH, the Biontech Small Molecules GmbH, the Crelux Solutions GmbH, WuXi App Tec Company and the PreOmics GmbH.

Biotech employee numbers at record high

Dr. Frank Mathias, Chairman of vfa bio and CEO of Rentschler Biotechnologie GmbH and Dr. Mathias Baedecker, Senior Knowledge Expert Biopharma R&D & Team Manager of the Boston Consulting Group spoke about medical biotechnology in Germany. Professor Domdey, Managing Director of BioM, presented the figures for the biotech industry in Bavaria. Employee numbers in the sector reached their highest level ever.

On the topic of “Renaissance of Vaccines” Dr. Jens Vollmar, Head of the Medical Department of Vaccines, Travel and Tropical Medicine at GlaxoSmithKline GmbH & Co. KG. Dr. Christine Günther, CEO of apceth GmbH & Co. KG., a pioneer from the region, explained the “next generation cell therapy” in her presentation.
