Flixtrain is expanding its services in Germany and will also start operating in Munich in two years. The traveltech company is relying on new high-speed trains with a maximum speed of up to 230 km/h. According to Flix, Munich is one of the most important growth markets for sustainable long-distance transport in Germany.
The new locomotives are of the Vectron type and come via partner Akiem. Siemens Mobility manufactures the vehicles in Munich-Allach. Flixtrain also plans to further expand the existing cooperation with local transport services.
“With Flixtrain in Munich, a circle closes for us – we’re coming back to where we started in 2013, Bavaria is a huge market for sustainable travel, and with our new trains we’re ushering in a new era of train travel here too – fast, comfortable and affordable for everyone”,
says André Schwämmlein, CEO and co-founder of Flix.
Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter also welcomes the expansion:
“The fact that Flixtrain will operate in Munich from 2028 and is relying on Siemens locomotives produced in Bavaria is a double commitment to the Bavaria location. More competition on the rails that doesn’t come at the expense of regional rail passenger transport is good for passengers, and investments in modern trains strengthen not only the transport sector but also our industrial location.”
New trains with more comfort
The new Flixtrains are based on the Talgo-230 platform and feature barrier-free entry, modern passenger information systems, powerful WiFi, and a new seating concept. Together with Talgo, Flix has made project-specific modifications to increase operational efficiency.
Flix is pursuing the goal of making sustainable long-distance transport affordable. The company is currently active in more than 40 countries and operates brands including Flixbus, Flixtrain, Kamil Koç, and Greyhound. Since its founding, Flix has relied on an asset-light business model and a technology-driven platform.
