The “glorious three” at the top

UnternehmerTUM is leading the way once again. For the third consecutive year, the innovation center has secured first place in the latest Financial Times “Europe’s Leading Startup Hubs 2026” ranking. It is confirmation of a concept that translates cutting-edge research directly into business. UnternehmerTUM was founded in 2002, has already supported more than 1,000 companies, and is thus one of Europe’s most established founding platforms. Over 50 new startups are created there each year.

The success model: cutting-edge research meets entrepreneurship. With strong industrial partners—from Airbus to BMW—and close integration with the TU München, UnternehmerTUM is considered a blueprint for technology-driven founding support.

The Start2 Group makes a significant jump forward, securing second place. The organization performs particularly strongly in the “Network” and “Track Record” categories.

With activities in 18 countries, it exemplifies the international perspective of the Munich ecosystem. It supports startups entering global markets—such as the USA or Asia—and strengthens the scalability of young technology companies far beyond Germany.

BayStartUP: the unsung engine (also) in the MTZ

Worth highlighting is the placement of BayStartUP. Although the institution has its official headquarters in Nuremberg, it is indispensable to the Munich ecosystem. With its office in the Münchner Technologiezentrum (MTZ), BayStartUP significantly shapes the local scene.

BayStartUP has made it into the top tier in the new ranking (third place) and thus underscores its role as the most important mediator between founders and capital. The fact that a Bavarian network bridging Munich and the rest of the Free State is rated so highly internationally shows: the combination of coaching, the Bavarian Business Plan Competitions, and direct access to the MTZ network is a genuine success formula.

Arno Eggers, Director Munich Startup, emphasizes:

“The fact that Munich has three players at the European top of the FT ranking—UnternehmerTUM, Start2 Group, and BayStartUP—sends a clear signal: our ecosystem has reached the highest level of maturity in Europe. Together with other strong partners like Gate Garching, WERK1, or SCE, we offer infrastructure that is unparalleled worldwide, and we are constantly expanding the location. In the coming years, further offerings will emerge that will underpin our position. The new MTZ building is just one of many examples.”

180 hubs, 25 countries—Munich at the top

For the ranking, the Financial Times, Statista, and the tech magazine Sifted analyzed a total of 180 startup hubs in 25 European countries. To be included, organizations had to be active since at least 2021, operate a physical location in Europe, and offer at least one incubation or accelerator program.

In addition to expert assessments from investors, founders, and scientists, the alumni’s successes were factored into the evaluation. Former participants rated mentoring, training offerings, infrastructure, legal support, as well as networking and financing opportunities.

An ecosystem in top form

In addition to the three top contenders, other Munich heavyweights appear in the ranking: WERK1 in the Werksviertel once again establishes itself as “the most likeable startup family” and scores particularly well in alumni satisfaction, and the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (SCE) of the Hochschule München once again demonstrates that entrepreneurship education takes place here at world-class level.

What does this mean for Munich?

The results reflect the high density of deep tech expertise and capital access in the region. In addition to the top-ranked organizations, WERK1 and the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (SCE) also cement Munich’s reputation as a leading hub for technology-oriented startups. In the coming years, further professionalization of the interface between research and market maturity can be expected.

Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger adds:

“Congratulations to the winners for this outstanding achievement! This shows: with our startup and ecosystem support, we are on the right track. Bavaria is the most successful state in terms of new business formations—and that is no accident. We support startups throughout Bavaria with coaching, infrastructure, networks, and capital. Every euro and every effort we invest in our young entrepreneurs is worth its weight in gold. Because the entrepreneurs of today are the guarantors of our economy’s competitiveness tomorrow.”
