Shanghai ranking examines 1,200 universities

A total of 1,200 universities were examined for the Shanghai Ranking of the world's top 500 universities. The ranking takes into account, with varying degrees of weight, the quality of teaching, staff, research performance, and the size of the various institutions.

Critics complain, among other things, that humanities research is not sufficiently taken into account in the Shanghai rankings. Furthermore, small universities are disadvantaged in the rankings.
