Sono Motors made a name for itself last summer: Through a Kickstarter campaign, the three young founders quickly raised more than €300,000. The Munich-based startup now plans to offer test drives with their green solar car as early as next July.
Backers who invested at least €2,000 in the Sono Motors crowdfunding campaign will have the opportunity to test drive the Sion car this summer. The young entrepreneurs then plan a presentation tour through German-speaking countries, Europe, and North America. Sono hopes to use pre-orders to pre-finance series production, which the company plans to begin in 2019.
Crowd and tech companies as partners
In general, the founders are relying on a close connection to the future customer base: the crowd will also have a say in the decision as to which features and equipment the series Sion should ultimately have.
The small-series manufacturer Roding Automobile GmbH is developing and building the two prototypes for Sion Motors. The Upper Palatinate-based company was founded by graduates of the Technical University of Munich.
The startup is targeting a list price of €16,000 for the production model. The range of 250 kilometers on a single charge can be extended by up to 30 kilometers thanks to self-charging via the solar cells.
