Films that founders should watch

Relaxation is a must every now and then! Even for stressed-out founders, investors, and the like. But of course, you can still find inspiration while chilling. For example, from films, documentaries, series, etc. that deal with the topic of entrepreneurship. German Startups has put together a small selection.

Forrest Gump

A classic! Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) sits on a bench at a bus stop and, in several episodes, recounts his entire life to a group of random people waiting there, one after the other. And this life is quite something: Forrest Gump, a mentally challenged boy and man, was a football player, ping-pong champion, long-distance runner, and celebrated war hero, as well as a company founder (Bubba Gump Shrimp) and investor (Apple). Okay, in all of this, Forrest Gump had more luck than sense. But his life, his actions, and his success show that anyone can make it. Just as Forrest Gump's mother always used to say: "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get.”.  Forrest Gump, 1994, 136 minutes.

And if you don’t want to learn anything from Forrest Gump, you should watch “6 Tips for Young Entrepreneurs – from Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

Thank You For Smoking

Nick Naylor (played by Aaron Eckhart) in Thank You for Smoking is the eloquent, manipulative press spokesman for Big Tobacco and fights for the rights of smokers and, above all, for those of supposedly evil cigarette manufacturers – after all, there's a lot of money at stake here! This successful and, at times, very entertaining film tells a hell of a lot about the power of PR campaigns, manipulation, target audience communication, the importance of lobbying and crisis PR. And ultimately, it's also about the fact that as a company, company founders and employees, you always have to stand by your product, no matter how much opposition you get. It doesn't always have to be cigarettes and you don't always have to distort reality. Non-smokers can also enjoy the film and learn a thing or two about product marketing, politics and the media world. Thank You For Smoking, 2005, 92 minutes.

The Startup Kids

The Startup Kids” is a documentary about young entrepreneurs in the USA and Europe. Among others, the creators of Vimeo, Soundcloud and DropboxThe trailer (below) for the 2012 film already gives a pretty good insight into the successful and exciting work of the two Icelandic entrepreneurs Vala Halldorsdottir and Sesselja Vilhjalmsdottir.

For t3n the documentary “one of the most influential documentaries about the new generation of entrepreneurs”. In any case, “The Startup Kids” spreads a spirit of optimism, and that is exactly what startups are all about. Incidentally, after “The Startup Kids,” Halldorsdottir and Vilhjalmsdottir launched the startup Kinwins, which no longer exists. But that's the life of a startup. You can't always win. The Startup Kids, 55 minutes
