In search of a plan: DLD 2017 in Munich

“…what’s the plan?” – This was the motto of the DLD Conference 2017 in Munich. The initiators, Stephanie Czerny and Dominik Wichmann, wanted to provide fewer "ready-made" answers during the three-day event, but rather encourage participants to ask plenty of questions.

Since 2005, the DLD (Digital Life Design) to regularly bring together renowned personalities from a wide range of fields to discuss “digital transformation”, gather ideas and inspire each other.

And the DLD started 2017 in the spirit of this mission, namely with a 3-day conference in Munich180 renowned personalities from science, business, and society, and over 1,000 participants, gathered in the Bavarian capital to address the issues posed by the digital age. Organizers Czerny and Wichmann emphasized the importance of simply asking questions before the conference even began:

Thematically, DLD 2017 focused primarily on artificial intelligence, mobility, big data, the future of work, and security & cyberwar. Startups were also not neglected: exciting personalities from the scene, such as Oliver Samwer of Rocket Internet, made their way to the podium, and the advantages of Sweden as a startup location were discussed.

But Munich doesn't have to hide either. In the panel Southern Super Hub The panel highlighted the strengths of Bavaria as a business location: international talent paired with technical know-how and excellent infrastructure. An environment in which not only established companies, research institutes, and universities, but also startups, can optimally develop. The panel was initiated by the City of Munich together with Invest in Bavaria, Munich Startup, and the MUST Conference (UnternehmerTUM).

That the “Southern Super-Hub” is not just empty words, but that the Munich (startup) scene is actually active, was shown on Tuesday morning at the Maker Valley Breakfast. Munich-based founders, network partners, and DLD guests met here and chatted over a relaxed breakfast. And hopefully, they asked plenty of questions—in the spirit of DLD.

And here are the highlights of the 3-day conference:
