The digital association Bitkom has been investigating how many jobs are created by startups for several years. This year, Munich again leads the "Startup Job League": The local startups employ an average of 24 people – six more than the national average. In 2015, Munich was far ahead hereOverall, things are looking good in the startup scene: Two out of three of the startups surveyed created new jobs last year. Another three-quarters of the founders plan to hire additional employees this year.
The results of a Bitkom survey of around 250 startup founders show that, on average, each startup in Germany currently employs 18 people. Munich leads the way with 24 jobs per startup, six more than other German regions.
A year ago, the national average was just 15 employees, and in 2015 it was only 13. By comparison, even then the state capital recorded an average of 21 new jobs created per Munich startup.
Two-thirds of startups have hired employees
Across Germany, two-thirds of founders (64 percent) created new jobs last year, around one in four (27 percent) saw no changes, and only 4 percent had to reduce their workforce.
Bitkom Managing Director Niklas Veltkamp to this:
“Startups are not only drivers of innovation in Germany, they also create a significant number of future-oriented jobs.”
Further job growth in sight
The figures for the future also show this: In 2017 alone, numerous additional jobs are likely to be created in startups. More than three-quarters of founders (77 percent) expect to hire new employees. Around half of them estimate that one to three additional positions will be created. Around one in five (18 percent) even plans to hire more than ten new employees.
