With a new system to combat drug smuggling: The Munich-based company FlixBus is currently testing cameras in the baggage area and a new check-in system to better detect and convict drug couriers. This was recently reported by Business Week.
At train stations and airports, various security measures are part of our everyday lives. The presence of police and security personnel is a familiar sight. But if you take a look at long-distance bus stations, you'll notice: nothing. This makes smuggling illegal goods via long-distance bus interesting and lucrative, especially for drug couriers. The Munich-based long-distance bus operator wants to avoid this situation. FlixBus change and has therefore decided to use a new system to combat drug smugglers and the like.
FlixBus calls for more government presence
For example, the luggage area is now being filmed on a trial basis while buses are being loaded, so that each passenger can be identified retrospectively by their respective luggage. The new system also includes luggage tags for suitcases, backpacks, bags, etc., along with their respective owners. FlixBus is advertising this new measure with signage.
While the new system could certainly contribute to prevention and better awareness, the company is also calling for better security measures and a presence of authorities at bus stations.
