The Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) occupy the top two places in Germany in a recent ranking. Internationally, Munich's universities also rank among the best in the world.
Three German universities made it into the world's 100 best in the 2019 QS World University Rankings. TUM ranks 61st worldwide, just ahead of LMU in 62nd place. Compared to the previous year's ranking, TUM improved by three places, and LMU by four. The Munich universities scored highly in various subcategories: TUM leads in faculty-student ratios, reputation among employers, and international student population. LMU leads in academic reputation, number of citations, and international faculty population. Overall, LMU achieved 69.4 points, while TUM achieved 70 points.
Oxford beats Cambridge in the ranking
Among German universities, Heidelberg University ranks third. Internationally, it ranks 64th, just behind the universities in Munich. The next German universities are the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (116th), Humboldt University (121st) and the Free University (131st) in Berlin, RWTH Aachen University (144th), and TU Berlin (147th). With the exception of the three highest-ranked universities in Germany, all other German top 150 universities lost ground internationally.
As in previous years, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) takes first place in the global ranking, ahead of Stanford, Harvard, and Caltech. Oxford overtakes its perennial rival Cambridge to fifth place.
