Germany paves the way for e-floaters

Good news for e-floater startups: How startup scene reported, the federal government is planning a regulation to legalize electric scooters, hoverboards, and the like on German roads. Until now, German manufacturers have had to focus on foreign markets.

The use of these small electric vehicles in public spaces is currently prohibited. Those who violate this rule face fines of up to €50. For now, though. A new vehicle class for these small electric vehicles, which operate in a speed range of 12-20 km/h, is to be defined this year.

Traffic relief through e-floaters

In other countries such as Austria, France, and, of course, the USA, the use of electric scooters, skateboards, hoverboards, etc. has long been common practice or even a trend. In Germany, the future regulation is hoped to ease inner-city traffic congestion: short car trips could be avoided, thereby reducing both noise pollution and exhaust emissions. Furthermore, these handy vehicles can be easily transported on public transport, making combined use possible.

When the new regulation will actually come into effect is still up in the air. It will be interesting to see whether the target of implementation in 2018 will be met. Micromobility startups such as the Munich-based start-up UrmO would certainly be pleased.
