Munich tests intelligent light poles

Intelligent light poles that not only illuminate the night but can also be used for data measurements in the surrounding area? Such examples can be found in Neuaubing-Westkreuz. They are one of the innovations being developed by the City of Munich as part of the EU project "Smarter Together“ will be tested.

Data collection through special sensors

Temperature, humidity, wind, traffic – the intelligent light poles can measure all of these things. Munich's IT consultant Thomas Bönig introduced them to the public and emphasized that Munich is already a pioneer and role model for tangible digitalization.

Exchange, information and free Wi-Fi

Interested citizens, tech fans, experts and project participants were able to exchange ideas and develop new ones – because citizen participation is a central concern of the project.

With the 60 light poles located in the Neuaubing-Westkreuz project area, which look almost like conventional lampposts from the outside, the city is testing an innovative data collection technology as part of the EU project "Smarter Together." The data from the surrounding area obtained by special sensors will be processed in a central database and made available to residents. In addition, residents in the project area will also benefit from the free M-Wi-Fi with which the poles are equipped.
