AMSilk and Airbus are jointly developing high-tech materials for lighter aircraft

The Munich-based biotech startup AMSilk is collaborating with the aviation group Airbus. The goal is to develop innovative lightweight materials.

AMSilk develops artificial silk and has already made it to the List of the 50 most innovative companies in the world The startup, based in IZB Martinsried has already with Adidas developed a shoe made from the new fibers.

AMSilk and Airbus to present prototype in 2019

The newly concluded cooperation agreement aims to develop composite materials for use in the aerospace industry. AMSilk's fibers are intended to enable flexible and robust lightweight construction. For years, lighter carbon fiber composites have been increasingly replacing metal and steel in the aerospace industry.

“We are delighted to be developing a fundamentally new material with Airbus, the world’s leading manufacturer of high-performance aircraft,”

says AMSilk CEO Jens Klein.

"At AMSilk, we are committed to producing materials that are both high-performance and sustainable. The current partnership with Airbus is an opportunity to set a new, stronger, and more sustainable course for the entire aerospace industry."

The two companies plan to present a prototype of the composite material in 2019.
