German Aviation Innovation Award 2019

The German Aviation Innovation Award (IDL) is entering a new round. The competition is seeking genuine innovations for aviation.

“Rethinking Flying,” “Emission Reduction,” “Cross Innovation,” and “Smart Factory” — applicants can submit their innovative ideas, concepts, and projects for the IDL 2019 in these four categories.

The four categories

The category “Rethinking Flying” takes into account everything from new types of propulsion to innovative flying objects and the digital customer journey — innovations that reinvent flying are recognized.

The category “Emission reduction” takes into account the sustainability concept anchored in aviation and recognizes innovations that reduce relevant emissions such as noise, CO2 and air pollutants.

Many new concepts have cross-sector potential. The category “Cross Innovation” Innovations from other industries that can also be applied in aviation or vice versa.

Whether industrial robots, automated assembly stations or augmented reality in production — the price category “Smart Factory” rewards innovations that promote automation and digitalization of manufacturing.

“New opportunities to promote innovation”

The IDL is organized by the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI), the German Aviation Association (BDL), the digital association Bitkom eV, and the P3 group. Supporters include the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Center for Applied Aeronautical Research (ZAL) are conferring the award. A jury chaired by Prof. Rolf Henke, DLR Executive Board Member for Aeronautics Research and Technology, will select the winners and present them at a ceremony on June 6, 2019, as part of the Bitkom Digital Aviation Conference in Berlin.

"The IDL has successfully established itself as an innovation platform for aviation. It brings together the various players in the industry and offers new opportunities to promote innovation – that is its strength. The submissions from the last years, 2016, 2017, and 2018, were impressive, and we are convinced that we will see exciting innovations in 2019 as well."

is glad Thomas Jarzombek, Member of the Bundestag and Federal Government Coordinator for German Aerospace.
