City ranking: Where are startups doing best?

The new "Global Talent Competitiveness Index" has produced a ranking of cities with a particularly favorable climate for startups and entrepreneurs. 114 cities worldwide were examined. Contrary to expectations, the winner is not California. Instead, the US capital, Washington, D.C., takes first place. Berlin, on the other hand, lags somewhat behind, a full 12 places behind Munich (20th).

Washington, DC, has the best prospects in the city rankings, leaving Scandinavian rivals Copenhagen and Oslo in second and third place. Other European representatives behind are Vienna and Zurich, followed by Boston.

Munich ahead of Berlin and Frankfurt in the global city ranking

With the exception of South Korea's capital Seoul (10th), only European and American cities make the top 10. However, there are no German representatives here. Munich performs best in 20th place. Berlin follows in 32nd place, with Frankfurt seven places behind (39th).

The evaluation is based on qualities in the following five areas: research, internationality, attractiveness, development opportunities, and the surrounding environment. Washington excels in four of these categories with excellent scores. Key factors were dynamic demographic growth, a stable economy, excellent infrastructure, a highly qualified workforce, and outstanding educational institutions, such as Georgetown University.

Germany ranks 14th worldwide

The "Global Talent Competitiveness Index" concludes overall that Switzerland, Singapore, and the United States remain the most attractive destinations for highly qualified individuals. The situation is different for countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These countries are experiencing a significant brain drain. Apart from Singapore and the United States, only European countries make it into the top ten. Germany ranks 14th, ahead of Canada and behind Iceland.
