Interview with Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer: Munich as a biotope for founders

Munich as a startup biotope where everyone knows everyone – this is how Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer, co-founder of eGym, explains the founding location in Munich. In an interview for deutschstartups.de He answers questions about the startup scene in the Bavarian capital.

Let's talk about Munich. When it comes to startups in Germany, the first place that comes to mind is Berlin. What are the advantages of Munich as a startup location?
We're fortunate that eGym has a presence in both Munich, where we have our headquarters, and Berlin. However, we deliberately chose Munich as our founding location four years ago because we have a constant high demand for top-notch engineers and computer scientists. Our proximity to the top universities here is naturally very helpful. The Free State of Bavaria provides excellent support, especially in the early stages of startups, from startup consulting to financing and funding opportunities.

What makes the startup scene in Munich so special?
The scene is manageable; people know each other, they exchange information, for example, about experiences with certain business angels, or they seek advice. This is particularly easy here in Munich. I'd almost say a very unique, cool "subculture" has developed among the local founders. I think it's great and I'm very sorry that I haven't been able to participate as often lately.

What is easier in Munich than in Berlin – and vice versa?
Of course, the paths are shorter here, and some things may be a bit more spontaneous than in the huge capital city scene. As mentioned, Munich is a compact startup hub. Berlin has a tremendous amount of online expertise—which makes it easier for us to find the right employees there. Hence our second headquarters in Berlin-Mitte.
