World University Rankings: TU Munich is the best university in the EU

The Technical University of Munich ranks first in the European Union in the QS World University Rankings. Ludwig Maximilian University is the second-best German university in the ranking.

With a global 50th place in the QS World University Rankings, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) ranks ahead of all other universities within the EU. Compared to the previous year, this represents a rise of five places in the global rankings for TUM. The ranking is led by the American universities MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and Caltech, as well as the elite British University of Oxford.

Ludwig Maximilian University ranks sixth within the EU and 63rd internationally. The ranking analyzed 51 disciplines at over 1,400 universities worldwide.

World University Rankings TU Munich tops in 10 subject groups, LMU in 14 disciplines

The Technical University of Munich is ranked in the top 50 worldwide in ten individual disciplines: electrical engineering (17th worldwide, 1st in Germany), physics/astronomy (22nd worldwide, 1st in Germany), architecture/built environment (23rd worldwide, 2nd in Germany), mechanical engineering/aerospace/production science (23rd worldwide, 2nd in Germany), chemistry (30th worldwide, 1st in Germany), agricultural and forestry sciences (32nd worldwide, 3rd in Germany), computer science/informatics (35th worldwide, 1st in Germany), statistics/operational research (40th worldwide, 1st in Germany), biology (40th worldwide, 3rd in Germany) and materials science (49th worldwide, 3rd in Germany).

The Ludwig Maximilian University, which traditionally offers a broader range of courses than the Technical University, ranks among the world leaders in 16 subjects: Ancient History (8th worldwide, 2nd in Germany), Philosophy (15th worldwide, 2nd in Germany), Physics / Astronomy (22nd worldwide, 1st in Germany), Veterinary Medicine (24th worldwide, 1st in Germany), Communication Sciences (25th worldwide, 1st in Germany), Biology (26th worldwide, 1st in Germany), History (26th worldwide, 2nd in Germany), Theology (30th worldwide, 5th in Germany), Dentistry (39th worldwide, 1st in Germany), Modern Languages (40th worldwide, 3rd in Germany), Law (41st worldwide, 2nd in Germany), Medicine (43rd worldwide, 1st in Germany), Pharmaceuticals (43rd worldwide, 1st in Germany), Chemistry (46th worldwide, 2nd in Germany), Anatomy / Physiology (worldwide 47, in Germany 1) and economics (worldwide 50, in Germany 2).
