The number of employees per startup grew by a full 14 percent. Around one in five startups employs 20 or more people, and around half of startup teams consist of fewer than ten employees. This is the result of a survey of 201 tech startups commissioned by the digital association Bitkom. The startups were surveyed online from the beginning of March to mid-May.
The vast majority of startups plan to continue expanding their teams in the future
"Along with good ideas, employees are a crucial resource for many startups. It's a good sign that the number of employees was not reduced during the past year of the coronavirus pandemic, even though many startups were hit hard economically by the crisis,"
says Bitkom President Achim Berg.
“The fact that the number of employees has even increased slightly despite the crisis is also encouraging because startups primarily create highly qualified jobs, for example for software developers.”
The Digital Association Based on the results, the company expects the number of employees to continue to rise in the coming year. 62 percent of the startups surveyed currently report vacancies. On average, there are three positions vacant per startup. The startups themselves are also planning for larger teams: More than three-quarters of the founders surveyed expect the number of employees to increase in 2021. 14 percent expect no change, and 4 percent anticipate a decline.
