Helsing writes on its website that software, and especially artificial intelligence, is a key capability for protecting liberal democracies. Accordingly, the Munich-based company intends to use its own AI solutions exclusively to support the militaries of liberal states.
Helsing's concept appears to fit the investment focus of Spotify founder Daniel Ek. A year ago, Ek announced that he would invest €1 billion of his personal wealth, primarily in European deeptech companies.
The Munich-based startup's Series A round totals €102.5 million. With the fresh capital, the company plans to expand its team to over 70 employees and accelerate product development. The company's valuation now exceeds €400 million. In the spring, Helsing secured €8.5 million in a seed round from investors including Zalando founders Robert Gentz and Rubin Ritter.
Helsing helps people analyze military data
Ek will take a seat on the company's board of directors. He describes Helsing as "ambitious, ethical, and driven by the mission to contribute to a thriving society."
The Munich-based company was founded just this year by Torsten Reil, Niklas Köhler, and Gundbert Scherf. Helsing evaluates military data such as camera images, radar, and other sensor data. However, the AI is not intended to identify military targets itself, but rather to support officers in analyzing the situation.
