Deloitte study: Munich is Germany's number 1 digital location

The international consulting company Deloitte examines Germany's digital locations. Munich ranks first, followed by Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, and Stuttgart. The study's evaluation criteria include the availability of skilled workers, the cities' innovative strength, and their attractiveness.

Deloitte's current study focuses on Germany's digital business locations. First, the consultants compiled a ranking of German cities in three categories. Deloitte examined 14 indicators, such as the strength of the IT industry, digital start-ups, the pool of IT specialists, and the city's appeal to companies and students. In the second step, they calculated the overall winner: Munich.

Talents, innovations and attractiveness

In the category Talents The state capital occupies the top position nationally. This takes into account not only the general level of education in the cities, but also the level and dynamics of employment in the ICT sector and the availability of IT specialists. The study emphasizes the strong networking of IT companies with universities and research institutions and the quality of training in Munich. The authors also consider it positive that many foreign IT companies have chosen to establish their headquarters in Munich.

At the Innovative power Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich lead the ranking. The Hanseatic city is ahead of the Isar metropolis in terms of research institutes and ICT companies, while Munich has a higher ICT start-up intensity.

A Attractiveness index The study authors determined the cities' rankings based on a survey of students and companies. In this "soft" location criterion, Munich ranks second after Hamburg and ahead of Frankfurt.

“Digital location factors are decisive in international competition”

In the overall ranking, Munich scored 94.1 points, Berlin with 88.1 is just ahead of Hamburg with 88.0. Alexander Börsch, Head of Research at Deloitte, emphasizes the importance of the digital economy for local economic development:

“In international competition, decisions are increasingly being made across all sectors digital location factors – especially the number highly qualified workers”,

Essential for Börsch: The collaboration between research, companies and startups:

“In general, a close networking of research institutions, universities and companies absolutely necessary. Only cities with strong regional innovation networks remain competitive in the long term.”

Munich is already well positioned in this area. High-profile networking events regularly take place in the Bavarian capital: At the end of February, startups, entrepreneurs and scientists will meet at MUST – The Munich Summit 2016 together. A diverse Event offering supports the Munich scene in networking. The recently announced construction of a start-up and innovation center in Munich's city centre will give the start-up scene additional impetus.
