Circular Republic: UnternehmerTUM establishes platform for circular economy

The UnternehmerTUM incubator is launching Circular Republic, an initiative to reduce resource consumption and advance the idea of a circular economy.

Circular Republic's goal is to decouple value creation from resource consumption. Specifically, it supports companies and startups in developing their innovations and ideas for the circular economy in line with market needs and transforming them into concrete business models. Furthermore, the initiative Companies and Startups with relevant stakeholders from academia, business, and the venture capital sector. Initial partner companies include BMW, SAP, Prezero, and Tengelmann.

“Large number of startups working on the circular economy”

The first project of the new initiative focuses on the textile industry, which currently reuses very few resources. A subsequent project focuses on the recycling of batteries.

Matthias Ballweg, Co-founder and Director of Circular Republic, says:

"Global developments surrounding climate change, resource scarcity, or supply bottlenecks, as well as the associated regulatory consequences, show that by the 2030s, there will no longer be a successful business model based on the exploitation of primary raw materials. The circular economy will be the key to solving the climate crisis and, at the same time, the driving force for innovation and prosperity in Europe. The large number of startups addressing the topic of the circular economy—we have identified almost 400 of them in Germany alone—is another indicator that this is the future."
