Almost half of the companies surveyed by Bitkom see their own industry as a leader or pioneer in digital innovations compared internationally. 29 percent place it in the middle of the pack, 19 percent among the laggards or already lagging behind. Digital Association surveyed 603 companies in Germany, including 163 from industry. Bitkom President Achim Berg says:
“Digitalization and production belong together, and the digital sector and industry are moving closer together.”

The networking and automation of entire value chains must now be extended not only across company boundaries, but to the entire industrial sector, Berg said.
Sustainability: Industry sees opportunities and threats
Two-thirds of the industrial companies surveyed are convinced they should become pioneers in the development of sustainable technologies, and 57 percent believe that the development of climate-friendly procedures and processes in industry could strengthen the competitiveness of the German economy. At the same time, political regulation is a concern for every second company: A total of 50 percent of the industrial companies surveyed say that climate policy is burdening the manufacturing industry in Germany and limiting competitiveness. Berg says:
“Digital technologies can make a decisive contribution to helping German industry achieve its climate goals.”
