The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) has “Welt am Sonntag” analyzed the composition of founding teams. The result: one in four startups involves a woman. For high-tech startups, this figure is only 12.8 percent.
All-female teams are even rarer: Only one in six companies and one in 20 high-tech firms are founded exclusively by women. Why is that?
On the one hand, this result is based on the study's methodology: women are more likely to start businesses alone and part-time. However, the analysis only considers full-time team-based startups.
The high proportion of men among students of engineering, technology, natural sciences, and computer science also increases their share in high-tech start-ups. The ZEW sees a third reason for the low proportion of women in the high demand from companies for female graduates: The good income and advancement opportunities for women reduce their inclination to start a business.
