Startup Champs: Munich presents its finalists

The pitch competition 'Startup Champs goes Digital Health' is seeking the best innovations from Germany's startup hotspots of Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, and Cologne. The finalists from Munich have now been chosen.

The finalists have been announced: Deepeye Medical, Custom Surgical, and Basebox will represent the Munich healthtech ecosystem in the Startup Champs pitch competition. In the grand finale on June 22, they will compete against three startups each from Berlin, Hamburg, and Cologne. This already guarantees them a small booth at the Bits & Pretzels Healthtech Conference, which will take place in Munich on June 20 and 21.

Deepeye Medical has developed a decision-support algorithm for ophthalmologists designed to help prevent blindness from treatable eye diseases. This allows physicians to offer personalized treatment to their patients, for example, those suffering from the widespread age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

"Deepeye has developed an innovative, promising approach that combines the platform concept from an economic and data-driven perspective with ophthalmology and AI-driven treatment plan recommendations. This has the potential to significantly improve the treatment outcome of retinal diseases for physicians and patients,"

leads jury member Lara Maier, Senior Business Development at Medgate, voted for the startup.

AI improves diagnostic efficiency

Also Custom Surgical is developing a solution for ophthalmologists: It will enable them to digitize images from their microscopes via smartphone. This facilitates remote medical treatments, the training of physicians, or the discussion of examination results in more difficult cases with colleagues. With this concept, the startup has already secured several awards, including the €500,000 Outstanding Graduate Award from the Luminate Accelerator.

Federico Acosta, CEO of Custom Surgical, explains:

“As a pioneer of digital transformation in ophthalmology, the Custom Surgical leverages AI technology and robust data acquisition capabilities to improve diagnostic efficiency and accuracy.”

The third finalist for the pitch competition 'Startup Champs goes Digital Health' is BaseboxThe startup aims to simplify healthcare software development and reduce costs to zero. With a universal, flexible, and powerful platform for building businesses, the startup aims to become the Shopify of healthtech.

Tobias Wann, CEO of Xempus AG, member of the jury of the preliminary round and Munich jury member for the final, is certain:

“For me, Basebox is a perfect finalist because it not only offers a compelling solution to many immediate problems, but also acts as an accelerator for other great ideas in the healthtech space.”
