Munich is Germany's best innovation cluster

In the Global Innovation Index (GII) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a sub-organization of the United Nations, Munich ranks 22nd, making it the best-ranked German innovation cluster.

First published in 2007, the GII examines global innovation activity using 80 indicators. Among other things, it examines measures related to the political environment, education, and infrastructure of individual economies in more detail to highlight current trends and developments.

An important component of the GII in assessing an economy's innovation performance is the analysis of science and technology clusters. These clusters are characterized by a high local concentration of patent applications and scientific publications.

Mayor Dieter Reiter is pleased with Munich’s strong performance in the innovation cluster:

Munich's strong position in the index is due, among other things, to the factors Patent applications, scientific publications, and participation in networks. The GII reports that 10,248 patent applications were filed in the last five years. This corresponds to 3,702 applications per million inhabitants. The largest share of these patents is in the areas of digital communication (13 percent) and transport (13 percent). Furthermore, the GII counts 24,239 journal publications in Munich between 2017 and 2021 – 12 percent of which were in the field of physics and mathematics.

"In Munich, we benefit from the strong collaboration between university and non-university research, business, public administration, and the startup scene. The city is doing a lot to promote innovation, including co-founding the Munich Urban Colab innovation and startup center. It promotes professional exchange and networking among all stakeholders and increasingly involves the creative industries in promoting innovation. The ranking as Germany's best innovation cluster shows that Munich's economic policy is on the right track!"
