The 2023 city ranking answers the question “Where is the best place to live?” with the same answer as in previous years: in Munich. A total of 71 different indicators from the areas of labor market, economic structure, quality of life, real estate market, and sustainability were included in the evaluation. The city ranking produces three different rankings. The level ranking captures the socio-economic structures in the major cities. Compared to the current status quo, the Bavarian capital remains at the top with 66.1 points. Also on the podium are Mainz with 62.4 and Stuttgart with 60.3 points.
In the so-called dynamic ranking, which is designed to predict developments over the next five years, Munich has significantly improved. While it only managed 30th place last year, this year Munich is back in the top 10, ranking ninth. Mainz, Berlin, and Leipzig are showing the greatest dynamics.
Based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, the sustainability ranking measures the economic, ecological, and social sustainability of Germany's major cities. Heidelberg leads the ranking, followed by Ingolstadt and Wolfsburg. Munich improved slightly from 18th to 17th place.
