Although expectations for artificial intelligence in business are high, many companies have struggled in recent years to actively use AI and deploy it profitably. However, the picture is gradually changing and the application of artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly straightforward. To successfully integrate AI into a company, however, requires a holistic approach. Startups benefit particularly in this regard, as they are more agile compared to large companies and can more easily structure their processes to leverage AI and gain a competitive advantage.
Similar to the late 1950s and 1960s, when the first companies began using computers and could set themselves apart from their competition, startups today can optimize their business processes and scale faster by leveraging AI. Unlike established companies, startups are typically not burdened by complex, rigid structures. They are agile and can respond more quickly to market changes. This means they are better able to integrate new technologies like AI and thereby improve their market position.
It doesn’t matter what product or service the startup offers. My own startup “Yoga Cat” developed the first deep-cleaning solution for sports and yoga mats, for example. It’s not about integrating AI into the product, but rather about how to structure the operational business so that it can be optimally utilized. Nowadays, it’s no longer as difficult to deploy artificial intelligence, and it’s not even necessary at the outset to develop AI solutions yourself, since there are already many good products on the market. If you also want to use AI in your startup, here are my tips for you:
Develop a vision for AI in your startup
First, you should get an overview of the possibilities of AI in order to define a vision for its use in your startup. This doesn’t mean you don’t need to have a deep understanding of how to develop AI systems, but rather to focus on the application of AI in business.
Furthermore, it’s important that you get a good overview of the status quo in your startup, particularly with regard to your business processes, the needs of your customers, and the trends in your industry. From this information, you can derive a vision for the use of AI in your company that is tailored to your specific business requirements.
For example, if you have a startup in the production sector, AI could be used to increase productivity and reduce errors. Here, for instance, you could automate quality control, optimize machine utilization, or improve supply chain efficiency. If your focus is on marketing and sales, you could leverage AI to create personalized offers and optimize marketing campaigns by analyzing and predicting customer preferences.
A clear vision helps you advance the use of AI in your company and use resources more effectively. A clear strategy also makes it possible to integrate AI technologies into your business processes step by step and achieve long-term competitive advantages.
Data should be your focus
Data is the fuel for AI systems and should therefore hold a central place in your company. It’s important that you set up your startup so that data can be generated and collected at all critical points. The goal should be that all decisions made in your startup are based on data. While this may initially sound difficult, most tools already do this automatically. CRM systems, Google Analytics, or sensor data, for example, can be used to collect important data points.
It’s also important that your team has a data-driven mindset and that everyone pulls together. Everyone in the company should understand how important data is to leverage AI systems, and data should be shared as transparently as possible.
By collecting and analyzing data, you can, for example, create predictive models, better understand customer behavior and preferences, and create personalized offers based on that. Data is the heart of AI systems, and the more data you collect, the better you can leverage the technology to optimize business processes and achieve competitive advantages.
Master your processes
To optimize the use of AI in your startup, it’s important to understand your business processes in detail and identify which ones can be automated or optimized. In particular, repetitive and standardized processes are well suited to automation with artificial intelligence.
There are already many AI tools on the market that do exactly what you need. Often, it’s not necessary to develop your own AI systems. A quick search can help you find the best AI tools for your startup. The costs are often lower than the benefit they provide.
One example could be that your startup regularly receives emails from customers with similar inquiries. Here, you could leverage AI systems to automatically categorize and respond to these emails. This saves you time and resources, allowing you to focus on more complex customer concerns.
Another example could be the automation of accounting processes. Here, AI technology can be used to automatically recognize and classify incoming invoices, create invoices, and execute transfers. This speeds up the process and minimizes errors.
In the production sector too, there are numerous opportunities to deploy AI systems for process automation. Here, for example, machines could be optimized so that they independently monitor the quality of products and initiate maintenance work if needed.
It’s important to emphasize that the use of artificial intelligence in business processes doesn’t always mean that human work becomes redundant. Rather, AI systems can help increase productivity and efficiency in the company and relieve human workers of repetitive tasks.
A holistic approach is the key to success with AI
Overall, there are numerous ways startups can leverage AI technology to optimize their business processes and achieve competitive advantages. A holistic approach that is based on a clear vision, the importance of data, and comprehensive process optimization is the key to success. Even if the use of artificial intelligence in your company initially seems cumbersome, the investment will pay off in the long run. So don’t let the complexity deter you, but rather deploy AI strategically to take your startup to the next level.
