The TUM ranks 49th globally in the ranking of the world’s best universities. TUM has improved by one position compared to the previous year. Within Europe, the Technical University ranks 12th, and within the European Union, it ranks third. The LMU achieves the second-best German university ranking at 59th place internationally. In the previous year, the Munich university ranked 64th. In Europe, LMU is ranked 14th, and within the European Union, it ranks fifth.
As Germany’s third-best university, Ruprecht Karl University in Heidelberg is listed at 65th place worldwide. The fourth and fifth positions among all German universities are held by the Free University of Berlin at 118th place and Humboldt University Berlin at 131st place.
Munich universities excel in different fields
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) near Boston leads the global ranking, followed by Cambridge in the United Kingdom, Stanford near California’s Silicon Valley, Oxford in England, and Harvard near Boston.
Rankings for individual subject areas provide deeper insight into the strengths and weaknesses of individual universities. The TU München shines especially in engineering and technology with a global 19th place ranking. In the natural sciences, TUM also achieves an excellent 28th place.
Ludwig Maximilians University scores well in the fields of life sciences and medicine (38), arts and humanities (40), and also in the natural sciences (46).
