In the fight against climate change, one climate culprit is frequently overlooked: the construction industry. Yet this sector is collectively responsible for approximately 40 percent of global CO2 emissions. The startup Emidat has taken on this industry. The young company is developing software that automates the creation of environmental product declarations (EPD) for the construction sector.
EPDs are standardized documents that provide information about the environmental impacts of a product over its entire lifecycle. Typically, this means tedious and expensive paperwork for manufacturers. Emidat’s platform digitalizes the process and enables easy collection of product data as well as automated creation of environmental impact declarations. This is intended to significantly reduce both the time and financial burden for building material manufacturers.
The concept has now convinced additional investors, who are providing the startup with four million euros. US venture capital firm General Catalyst is leading the seed round.
Samuel Beyer from General Catalyst comments:
“We see Emidat as a turnkey solution to decarbonize the emissions-intensive construction industry from the ground up. Emidat will increasingly function as a collaborative platform where the industry can jointly access and exchange material data. We believe this will help accelerate the industry’s transformation and improve supply chain efficiency.”
The startup plans to invest the fresh capital in further product development and team expansion. The target goal is to save at least 100 million tons of carbon dioxide per year by 2030.
