Around 120 invited guests from politics, science, industry and the investor community celebrated the opening of MAxL. Its offering focuses on the early phase of company founding from science and research. On approximately 900 square meters in the Innovation and Startup Centre for Biotechnology (IZB), MAxL aims to set new standards for the biotechnology industry in Bavaria. The Bavarian Ministry of Economics is supporting the incubator with €8.5 million.
The early-stage incubator is specifically designed to support preseed and early-stage startup teams in the life sciences and healthtech sectors. With a comprehensive support program and a network of experienced industry and finance experts, MAxL aims to bring their ideas successfully to market maturity. Preseed teams can use MAxL’s facilities for up to three years, early startups for up to two years. The first startups have already moved in. The incubator’s services also include intensive support for interdisciplinary collaboration, which is considered key to success in biotechnology.
“With the opening of our startup incubator MAxL, we are setting an important milestone in supporting innovative ideas and young companies in the field of life sciences and medicine. We are proud to accompany the next generation of biotech pioneers on their journey and actively help shape the future of medicine,”
explains Prof. Dr. Ralf Huss, CEO of BioM.
MAxL offers state-of-the-art laboratory and communication spaces
Dr. Petra Burgstaller, Incubation & MAxL Co-Lead at BioM, emphasizes:
“Our incubator creates optimal conditions for aspiring founders in the fields of life sciences and healthtech. With state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and inspiring co-working areas, we offer the ideal environment to turn visionary ideas into reality.”
Within eight months, the existing laboratory facilities were equipped with cutting-edge technical infrastructure. The laboratory area offers 18 immediately usable laboratory workstations and a fully equipped shared laboratory as well as a cell culture area. The shared spaces have been converted into bright, modern offices and communication areas. The design of the areas is intended to create a creative and productive working environment.
Partnerships with industry and investors
MAxL also relies on close collaboration between government, BioM, science, investors and industry. Through strategic collaborations between MAxL and big pharma, biotech, CROs, investors and other industry partners, startups gain access to additional offerings. The globally operating companies Wuxi Biologics and Merck have already been secured as partners and support with expertise in the discovery, development and manufacturing of biological active substances from the concept phase through to commercialization. Equipment and reagent manufacturer Promega also contributes expertise and access to cutting-edge instruments. Additional partners are expected to follow shortly.
All information about the new incubator and its programs can be found on the MAxL website.
