Custom Surgical closes a pre-series A financing round of 3.5 million euros. Ventech leads the round, with Zeiss and a group of existing and new investors also on board. Zeiss’s participation sends a central signal for the round. In addition to capital, the leading company in optics and medical technology brings expertise, global reach, and experience in ophthalmology and precision optics.

Digital continuity for practices and clinics

Analogue hardware tools and fragmented documentation processes still characterize everyday life in ophthalmological care. This is where Custom Surgical comes in, developing hardware-independent digitalization solutions that can be integrated into existing clinical environments. Practices and hospitals retrofit existing slit lamps and surgical microscopes and capture high-quality image data without having to replace core devices or change established workflows.

At the center is the cloud-based platform Microrec Connect. It manages ophthalmological data across devices and manufacturers and enables the secure capture, storage, and structuring of images and videos. At the same time, the platform supports patient documentation as well as optimized clinical workflows.

Custom Surgical does not view Microrec Connect as a classic image archive, but rather as a unifying digital layer for ophthalmology. The solution connects examinations, procedures, and follow-up care over extended periods and creates the foundation for more efficient collaboration and data-driven care.

Gradual transition to AI-supported care

The company pursues a clear three-step approach: first digitalize, then standardize, then introduce AI applications. This approach is intended to lower the entry barriers for clinics and ensure that future AI tools are based on real clinical workflows. Custom Surgical is already preparing AI-based support functions, such as for improving image capture quality, for triage, or for optimizing referral pathways. Physicians retain full control.

“Global demand for eye care is growing so rapidly that current clinical processes can no longer keep pace. Scalable digital workflows are essential to enable fast and accurate preventive examinations for a growing and aging global population. This financing confirms our long-term vision: first build the data foundation and then unlock the clinical and economic value of AI. We are proud to work with Ventech, Zeiss, and our investors as we expand globally”,

says Federico Acosta, CEO of Custom Surgical.
