Physicians at the University of Cologne conducted a study with 66 patients with hereditary polycystic kidney disease, also known as cystic kidneys, to examine the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of a ketogenic diet. The experts in personalized nutrition at Foodpunk created customized nutrition plans for the participants in the experimental group. The study was published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine.

The study results confirmed the assumption of a positive effect. The diet was not only very well received, but also led to positive changes in important parameters such as kidney function. Overall, 95 percent of participants described the ketogenic diet as feasible. Using biomarkers, the research team demonstrated that participants actually adhered to the ketogenic diet. The results are relevant for many people. Cystic kidneys are the most common genetic kidney disease and account for approximately ten percent of all cases of kidney failure.

“Foodpunk app helps with dietary changes”

Numerous studies have already investigated the role of nutrition in disease and aging in general. The study at Cologne University Hospital contributed to this using personalized nutrition plans from Foodpunk. The study director, Professor Dr. Roman-Ulrich Müller, comments:

“Changes to eating habits are not easy for most patients to implement in everyday life right away. But the study participants succeeded. From our perspective, the use of Foodpunk nutrition plans as part of the study made a significant contribution to this. The Foodpunk app offers solutions for the practical challenges that dietary changes often bring to everyday life. For example, the ability to simply swap out a food from the plan if it’s not available at the supermarket.”

“We are very proud that our team was able to make such an important contribution to the study. We believe that personalized nutrition must always be easy to implement and delicious. That’s why we are thrilled that our recipes and nutrition plans were so well received by the participants and contributed to a successful dietary change,”

says Foodpunk founder and CEO Marina Lommel.
