The Munich district ranks first for the first time in the Prognos Future Atlas 2022, followed by the city of Erlangen in second place and the city of Munich in third place. These are followed by the city of Ingolstadt, the city of Wolfsburg, the Böblingen district, and the cities of Darmstadt and Stuttgart. With the Starnberg district in ninth place, the Munich metropolitan region is represented in the German top ten three times.
Future atlas: High share of ICT employees
The city of Munich particularly benefits from a high density of universities and research institutions as well as the numerous top companies located there. The state capital receives its best rankings in the areas of labor market, competition & innovation, and in the current strength of the business location. Moreover, gross domestic product between 2015 and 2020 showed significantly stronger growth than the overall German average. In terms of the number of start-ups, Munich is also ranked among the top ten. According to the report, 6.9 percent of employees in Munich work in the future industry of IT and telecommunications services. After Berlin, this is the second-highest value nationwide.
The Munich district is well positioned in the same categories of the Future Atlas as the city of Munich and is even ranked ahead of the city of Munich in each case. Additionally, the district achieves a nationwide second-place ranking in the prosperity & social situation category, behind the Starnberg district.
