Together with the Munich startup Proband 15, Bavaria’s state capital launched the open data competition “Munich Data Delicacies Wanted” in early 2026. Until 11 February 2026, data enthusiasts, developers, designers and creative minds are invited to submit their projects and demonstrate how city data can be newly interpreted.
The use of open data from the city of Munich forms the basis for the work. Interested parties must use at least one dataset from the Munich Open Data Portal. The data is administration-related, machine-readable, freely usable and openly licensed.
Creative processing desired
The competition invites creative engagement with the data. Examples of submissions can include:
- Visual data presentations that reveal surprising connections or correlations
- Artistic and creative representations of city data that are both informative and appealing
- Interactive dashboards that invite users to conduct their own analysis
- Humorous interpretations that convey data in a playful way
- Technically elegant solutions that show new ways to analyze or present data
Contributions should inspire new perspectives on Munich and at the same time strengthen understanding of open data. An expert jury evaluates submissions based on creativity, degree of innovation and technical implementation. Particularly successful ideas will be awarded prizes.
Background and promotion of the competition
The competition is based on an initiative by startup Proband 15, which in 2025 won the challenge “Unlocking Open Data Potential for Munich” with its “Datengartl’n” project as part of the Munich Innovation Competition. Building on this success, new “Munich Data Delicacies” are now to demonstrate the potential contained in open city data. The results are intended to provide impetus for further data-driven projects and promote the use of open data in business, research and society.
Participation conditions, examples and tips for using open data, and further information on registration and prize money can be found on the competition page.
