Mbiomics has reached the third closing of its series A financing round and raised a total of 30 million euros. Funders include several existing investors, including MIG Fonds and Bayern Kapital. With the additional twelve million euros, the startup aims to strengthen its data foundation and accelerate the development of its therapeutic approaches.
Mbiomics is working on live biotherapeutic products (LBPs). These are oral therapeutics consisting of living bacterial strains and designed to restore the potential of the gut microbiome in a scalable and standardized manner.
Focus on clinical development
The startup is currently preparing clinical trials for its leading drug candidate MBX-116. It is intended to be used in combination with so-called immune checkpoint inhibitors. These medications help the immune system better recognize and fight cancer cells. The goal is to improve the treatment of advanced melanomas. Mbiomics is planning a first clinical trial for 2027.
CEO and co-founder Johannes B. Woehrstein says:
“Although the clinical potential of the gut microbiome is well known, implementing microbiome-based therapeutics into a scalable product remains a significant technical challenge. At Mbiomics, we solve this challenge by building the entire technology stack for development, analysis, screening, and manufacturing of complex microbial consortia. Our focus now is on bringing our leading drug candidate MBX-116 into clinical trials.”
Investors are also convinced. Matthias Kromayer from MIG Capital comments:
“We are pleased to continue supporting Mbiomics in this financing round. Since our initial investment, the team has made impressive progress in translating microbiome research insights into a scalable therapeutic approach. The company is on the verge of beginning clinical validation and is continuing to expand its diverse therapeutic pipeline with great momentum.”
