The Munich-based aquaculture startup Oceanloop has secured funding of up to 38.5 million euros. The capital is intended to drive the scaling of its land-based aquaculture technology and the farming of giant grouper in Europe. The financing combines new equity commitments from Hatch Blue’s Blue Revolution Fund and Stolt Ventures with a 32 million euro venture debt facility from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The European Union’s InvestEU program backs the EIB financing.

Oceanloop develops software-controlled recirculating aquaculture systems, known as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). The company was founded in 2023 through the merger of several German players in land-based aquaculture. In April 2026, the sale of giant groupers from the existing facility in Strande near Kiel was launched via sister company Honest Catch. According to its own statements, Oceanloop is the first company in Europe to farm this fish species.

New Breeding Facilities in Kiel and on Gran Canaria

With this capital, Oceanloop is now launching its industrial scaling. Construction of a facility in Kiel with an annual capacity of around 250 metric tons of giant grouper is scheduled to begin at the end of 2026. For 2029, the company plans to start construction of another facility on Gran Canaria, which is slated to produce around 2,000 metric tons per year.

Fabian Riedel, founder and CEO of Oceanloop, says:

“This financing marks the beginning of industrial scaling for Oceanloop. Together with Sander Aqua, we have spent more than a decade developing, operating, and continuously improving land-based marine aquaculture systems. With Hatch Blue, Stolt Ventures, and the European Investment Bank, we are combining specialized investment expertise in aquaculture, decades of experience in the commercial seafood trade, and long-term European growth financing. This provides us with the foundation to expand Oceanloop from a proven technology into an international aquaculture platform.”

In addition to its own farming facilities, Oceanloop aims to scale its technology internationally through partnerships, joint ventures, and licensing models. According to the company, the platform can be adapted to various marine species and locations. Oceanloop is also continuing its research and development work on land-based shrimp farming.
