The camper rental company Off from Camperboys GmbH was founded in 2016 as a project by two students and developed into a successful traveltech company. Eight years later, it appears to be coming to an end: the company has filed an application for insolvency proceedings with the Munich District Court. The provisional insolvency administrator is Baker Tilly partner attorney Dr. Alexander Fridgen.
The stated goal is to continue the business together with new investors. A press release already mentions initial negotiations. Salary payments for employees are secured through the end of the current year. Affected customers will be informed about the next steps as quickly as possible.
Dr. Alexander Fridgen explains:
“In the course of the preliminary insolvency proceedings, we will first get an overview of the situation at Camperboys GmbH and initiate the necessary concrete steps. Despite the difficult current situation, we are working intensively together to find ways to continue business operations in the long term and to successfully drive forward the restructuring of the company with a new investor.”
Off, or Camperboys GmbH, rents campers at ten locations in Germany and operates a fleet of around 1,200 camping vehicles. The entire service, from rental to travel planning, is provided using custom-developed software. Since 2022, the company has been working on restructuring its business model due to changing market conditions. The shift is moving away from its own fleet toward an asset-light model with rental fleets from external system partners.
Rising purchase prices for vehicles, high financing costs, and declining residual values of campers on the used car market put significant pressure on the startup. A pending financing round with external investors as bridge financing recently failed, forcing Camperboys into insolvency.
Paul Pizzinini, CEO and founder of Camperboys GmbH, emphasizes:
“We deeply regret that we had to take the step into insolvency, but we remain optimistic that through strategic partnerships and restructuring we can make our business model fit for the future. Our goal is to continue offering proven Camperboys quality to our customers, to preserve as many of the jobs we have created as possible, and to gradually expand our market position further.”
In a post on LinkedIn, the founder shows fighting spirit and calls for support from the community. The provisional insolvency administrator is available as a contact person for potential investors.
