Ororatech’s involvement demonstrates how strongly newspace companies are now being integrated into security-relevant applications. The Munich startup, previously best known for its satellite-based forest fire early detection, is among the first partners of the new platform for sovereign space-based reconnaissance.
Ororatech brings earth observation data into new platform
With the new initiative, Rheinmetall and Iceye aim to consolidate existing German space expertise in a common architecture. The goal is to combine data from different sources, evaluate it more quickly, and make it usable for operational decisions.
Ororatech contributes its expertise in the field of thermal earth observation. The Munich company operates its own thermal imaging satellites and analyzes global temperature data, which has been used for forest fire early detection and risk management, among other applications.
Together with the other partners, this is to create a multimodal earth observation capability that combines different sensors and data sources. Rheinmetall Iceye Space Solutions acts as the integrator of the various technologies.
Rheinmetall leverages networking of existing capabilities
According to Rheinmetall, the focus is primarily on integrating existing technologies in a common system.

Germany already has the technological building blocks for sovereign space-based reconnaissance. Rheinmetall Iceye Space Solutions integrates them into a unified operational architecture.”

The platform is to connect sensors, analytics, command support, and operational applications across space, air, land, sea, and cyber domains. The approach is based on an open architecture that can be expanded with additional capabilities in the future.
Strategic autonomy as the goal
Iceye also sees the initiative as a contribution to European sovereignty in space, as Rafal Modrzewski, co-founder and CEO of Iceye, reports:

Now Rheinmetall Iceye Space Solutions is building on this foundation by connecting Germany’s leading newspace capabilities in an open architecture. For Ororatech, participation also marks entry into a project that underscores the growing importance of earth observation data for security and defense applications. While many newspace companies initially targeted commercial markets, their technologies are increasingly being deployed for government and security-relevant tasks today.

The partnership also underscores Munich’s importance as one of Europe’s leading hubs for aerospace and earth observation technologies. In recent years, an ecosystem has developed with companies like Ororatech that is increasingly playing a role in strategic future topics.
