With Aurio, Personio is acquiring a Munich-based AI startup specializing in recruiting automation. The Aurio team is joining Personio’s product, engineering, and design teams. The focus is on AI features for sourcing and screening. Relevant candidate profiles will be automatically identified, and incoming applications will be evaluated and prioritized. However, the final decision remains with humans.
Personio enters efficiency-driven growth phase
“Achieving our first profitable quarter is a milestone for Personio,”
says Hanno Renner, CEO and co-founder of Personio.
“It means we can finance our innovations from our ongoing business—independent of external capital. This is an important step in building a resilient company and giving our customers the assurance that we will be at their side for the long term.”
For the Munich startup ecosystem, the acquisition of Aurio is relevant because one of Europe’s most well-known HR tech companies is transitioning from a pure growth trajectory to a more efficient, AI-driven phase.
Recruiting customers as direct leverage
For over 10 years, Personio has been offering its HR software primarily to small and medium-sized businesses. Over the past two years, Personio has made targeted decisions to streamline processes, accelerate operations, and work closer with customers. According to the company, 16,000 customers now use the platform.
Already 9,000 customers use Personio’s recruiting function. This brings several advantages. On one hand, Aurio has a direct integration path into an existing customer base; on the other hand, in the case of a hiring mistake, significant costs—up to an average of 44,339 euros in a European company—can be saved.
Payroll grows 80 percent per year
In addition to the recruiting solution, Personio also sees the Payroll application as a growth driver. According to the company, the business grows 80 percent annually and serves more than 1,500 customers. The European payroll market is expected to reach a volume of nearly 23 billion euros (27 billion US dollars) by 2035.
Personio is combining its first profitability milestone with a strategic AI acquisition in Munich. The Aurio acquisition particularly strengthens the recruiting product and shows that AI in the HR tech market is increasingly being positioned not as an add-on feature but as a core component of workflows.
