The Phönix Award is one of the few business awards in Germany that specifically highlights the entrepreneurial achievements of founders and business owners with a migration background. Especially for the Munich startup ecosystem, which is characterized by international diversity, the award sends a clear signal for diversity and business success. Applications are open until September 18, 2026.
Entrepreneurial performance and diversity take center stage
Unlike traditional startup awards, the Phoenix Award is not aimed exclusively at startups. Entrepreneurs from a wide variety of industries can apply, provided their company is based in Munich and has been operating successfully for at least three years. Another requirement is a migration background among the owners.
Three criteria in particular will be evaluated:
- positive business development
- Creation and securing of jobs and training positions
- Active diversity and intercultural commitment within the company
Four categories – also suitable for startups
The competition takes different company sizes and development stages into account. The award is presented in the following categories:
- Newly founded companies
- Small businesses
- Established companies
- Companies with a special corporate history
This also gives young growth companies the opportunity to apply for the award alongside established businesses.
Economic success and social responsibility
According to the city, the Phönix Award combines economic performance with societal added value. In addition to revenue development and growth, factors such as training achievements, job creation, and a diverse corporate culture are factored into the evaluation. An independent panel of experts decides on the award.
Previous winners include the Munich company Treesense, which develops sensor solutions for trees and has already received the Phönix Award.
