The Sprind subsidiary Pulsed Light Technologies is to address topics that are essential for the development of laser-driven nuclear fusion, but are not core development by startups working on fusion power plants. The company itself is not to develop physical fusion processes, but rather to support startups in the field through material investigations using high-intensity neutron beams. Specifically named as startups that will benefit from this engagement are Marvel Fusion from Munich and Focused Energy from Darmstadt. However, the offer is also aimed at potential future market participants.
“A functioning and economically viable fusion power plant would be a true breakthrough innovation,”
says Rafael Laguna, director of Sprind.
“Fusion could offer a relatively clean and geologically independent way of generating electricity continuously without requiring scarce resources. That is why, particularly with a view to the planned phase-out of fossil fuels and the simultaneously increasing demand for electrical energy, it makes sense for us to use public funds to accelerate the development of this technology.”

Pulsed Light Technologies’ designated managing director Antonia Schmalz says:
“Our plans provide for us to invest up to 90 million euros in the technology over the next five years.”
The planned infrastructure to be provided by the Sprind subsidiary primarily includes laser systems, but also necessary diagnostics, optics topics and central robotics and mechatronic elements. In addition, Pulsed Light Technologies is to provide computing power for complex and demanding plasma simulations.
