Startup meets craftsmanship is back

Last night it finally happened: After a two-year Corona break, ‘Startup meets craftsmanship’ could finally take place in front of an audience again. The event was launched in 2016 by Munich Startup in cooperation with the Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern (HWK) and has since established itself as a popular information and networking event. In addition to an entertaining stage program where all startups and innovative craftspeople could introduce themselves briefly, networking continued in a relaxed atmosphere with regional specialties. The culinary offerings included, among others, the Münchner Käsemanufaktur, Munich’s only cheese dairy. While the cheese is not yet being produced directly in Munich, the founders are looking for premises in the state capital. This is an aspect that was repeatedly mentioned at yesterday’s event: suitable and affordable space for manufacturing operations is in short supply in Munich. Nonetheless, the Münchner Käsemanufaktur is already producing several varieties of cheese, which participants were able to taste yesterday. How craftsmanship can also have a future in urban areas was demonstrated by Cowerken yesterday evening. As the name suggests, it’s all about coworking for craftspeople. In a 1,000 m² workshop space in Munich’s Westend, there will be room for up to 15 makers who aim to make themselves self-employed in their trades. Without major startup capital and financial risk, craftspeople should be able to get started easily. Raphael Eckstein of Airview Bavaria showed the audience that drones can do more than just capture beautiful panoramic shots from above – they also make sense in a craft context. As a roofer, he uses drone flights to get an overhead view of buildings and can thus identify possible damage without needing expensive scaffolding. This saves time and financial resources. On the topic of sustainability management, Munich startup Cubemos presented its software solution yesterday evening. With it, companies can not only easily assess their own sustainability according to ESG criteria, but after the assessment also receive an individual action plan. A touch of van life also blew through ‘Startup meets craftsmanship’: Campermaker and founder Nico Rausch presented his camper fittings based on a flexible modular design method first on the stage, sketching his path as a designer through the makerspace to his own furniture manufacture, which thrives on close collaboration with local craft businesses. Hard seltzer is not yet a big thing here in Germany, but the drink is already enjoying real popularity on the US market. Yesterday, participants in ‘Startup meets craftsmanship’ were able to sample a product from a regional producer: Hof & Freunde Drinks presented their Gerhard Seltzer. The drink, which is currently available in three flavors, is brewed from organic beet sugar and natural organic flavors and extracts to become the first naturally cloudy German hard seltzer in organic quality – with an alcohol content of 4.5 percent. Are23 presented a painter and coating robot yesterday evening. With this robot, the coating of surfaces in construction should be automated and operational processes digitalized. The goal is by no means to eliminate the painting trade, but rather to support it through new technologies in the face of skilled labor shortages and to make it more attractive to new generations in the long term. The idea lives on: Kuchentratsch, which had to file for insolvency some time ago and has since found a partner to continue the business, not only brought cake yesterday evening but also presented the concept of baking grandmothers and grandfathers. Older people can not only earn some extra money to supplement their pensions but also regularly move within a social context. A world without delivery notes – that’s what Vestigas is working on. When asked how many people still work with delivery notes daily, many hands went up in the audience.
