For startups in the insurance and financial sectors, functional technology is rarely enough. Industry knowledge, regulatory guidance, and above all, access to companies that can test a solution and later adopt it as customers are also crucial.
This is precisely where the Tech Accelerator Day by InsurTech Hub Munich (ITHM) comes in on October 13 in the Werksviertel. The format combines an exclusive morning program for startups and scaleups with an ecosystem event open from 2 pm.
The ITHM is more than just an event organizer. The Munich-based innovation platform is one of the German federal government’s official Digital Hubs and is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. According to its own figures, its startup community now encompasses more than 200 companies.
Mentoring aims to facilitate startup access to the German insurance market
For participating startups, Accelerator Day kicks off in the morning. Starting at 9 am, the agenda features mentoring, masterclasses, and insights into the German insurance market. According to ITHM, participants include financial supervisory authority BaFin, Deloitte, technology partners, and selected insurance companies, among others.
With this, the hub is specifically targeting companies looking to grow in Germany or the DACH region, or deploy their technology in the insurance industry for the first time. In addition to traditional insurtechs, the offering is also explicitly geared towards cross-industry startups.
According to the organizers, insurers such as HUK-Coburg, R+V, and LV, among others, are set to present their current challenges. The reverse pitches flip the classic startup pitch format: established companies present the specific problems for which they are seeking technological solutions and potential collaboration partners.
Through its Venture Client Programme, ITHM brings startups together with established insurers in a targeted manner to develop solutions for specific industry problems to market readiness.
Foliume co-founder Martin Fagioli, for example, explains how gaining access to the industry can deliver tangible added value for startups:
“The ITHM innovation program supported our entry into the German market by opening up numerous business opportunities with potential insurance partners. The program provided us with a deep understanding of the specific characteristics of the German insurance market—much better than we could have achieved on our own.”
Startups meet investors, insurers, and tech companies
In the afternoon, the mentoring program transforms into a broader ecosystem event. From 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM, the agenda features startup pitches, reverse pitches, speed dating sessions, keynotes, and networking, among other highlights. A joint networking session is scheduled to conclude the event starting at 5:00 PM.
Not all participating startups will get stage time. According to the organizer, a curated selection of companies with relevant use cases and corresponding traction will present their solutions. For the remaining participants, the main focus will be on direct contacts with insurers, investors, and other partners.
The broader ecosystem includes Gründerland Bayern, BayStartUP, Invest in Bavaria, BaFin, LMU, and Munich Startup. This offers founders the opportunity not only to get to know insurance companies, but also to establish contacts in financing, regulation, research, and other support services across the Munich hub.
AI, Regulation, and Venture Capital: Where Is the Money Flowing?
One key focus of the afternoon will be how startup financing, regulation, and collaboration between young and established companies are evolving. A panel discussion will bring together diverse perspectives on the topic. Announced participants include AI company TODAY, which develops solutions for financial and insurance advisors, Margaux Gregoir from Serena VC, Tizian Hoppen from High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), and Juliette Delattre from NTT DATA DACH.
C2PA and Content Credentials: Digital authenticity becomes an insurance issue
A second block of topics addresses a challenge that is becoming increasingly significant due to generative AI: How can we trace where digital content originates and whether it has been altered?
The focus is on C2PA and so-called Content Credentials. The technical standard is designed to make information about the origin and editing of digital content verifiable. For insurers, this can become relevant, for example, in digital claims reporting, documents, fraud prevention, or risk assessment.
These 7 technologies are in focus at the Tech Accelerator Day
In addition to the panels, the Accelerator Day will explore various technologies and business models that already enable tangible applications in the insurance industry:
- Autonomous and Bionic Agents: AI agents that perform tasks independently or support employees.
- Risk & Compliance Automation: Automation of regulatory checks directly within the sales process.
- Customer Analytics and Churn Prevention: Data and AI systems for analyzing customer behavior and reducing churn.
- Hybrid Advisory: Combination of human advisory services with AI-powered assistance systems.
- Digital Identity, Security & Compliance: Technologies for identity verification, security, and regulatory requirements.
- New distribution models: Digital sales channels and new interfaces to insurance customers.
- Wallet integration: Integration of digital wallets into insurance and financial products.
