The Munich spacetech startup The Exploration Company has successfully completed an important development step for its Nyx space capsule. In a drop test in California, the recovery system worked as planned – a crucial proof of the spacecraft’s safe return and another milestone on the path to the planned demonstration flight in 2028.

Europe is working intensively to expand its capabilities in space. With Nyx, The Exploration Company is developing one of the continent’s most ambitious private space projects. The parachute test that was just successfully completed addresses one of the greatest technical challenges of any space mission: safe return to Earth.

Critical test for return from space

The test took place on May 19 in the Mojave Desert in California. A specially developed drop test vehicle (DTV) was used, which replicates the mass, aerodynamics, and essential structural properties of the later Nyx capsule.

A helicopter lifted the test vehicle to approximately 9,100 feet, or about 2.8 kilometers in altitude. After release, a drogue parachute system was activated first, which stabilized and slowed the vehicle. This was followed by a transition to the main parachutes, which are responsible for controlled descent.

This transition is considered particularly demanding. The parachutes must deploy precisely under high load, while the spacecraft remains stable at the same time.

All test objectives achieved

According to The Exploration Company, the entire test sequence was successful. The parachutes opened as intended, the timing sequences met expectations, and the measured flight data were within predicted values.

The company is working with Airborne Systems to develop the system. The specialist in parachute and recovery technologies has decades of experience in aerospace and space programs.

The data obtained will now be incorporated into further qualification of the recovery system and support preparation of upcoming development and flight tests.

Nyx to make Europe’s space industry more independent

The successful test is significant not only for The Exploration Company. Europe currently has limited options for independently returning payloads from orbit after a mission. Accordingly, there is great interest in private space companies that could close this technological gap.

With Nyx, the startup founded in 2021 aims to develop a reusable spacecraft for transporting cargo and eventually astronauts as well. The capsule is intended to serve various missions in the future and strengthen Europe’s independence in space transport. Each successfully completed test increases the technical maturity of the program and reduces risks on the path to future missions.

Demonstration flight planned for 2028

Additional tests and qualification steps are necessary before the planned demonstration flight. However, the parachute test just completed is among the central proofs for the safety and reliability of the recovery system.

For The Exploration Company, the success therefore marks far more than a technical interim step. It shows that the company is moving closer to its goal of building a European alternative for space transport and return missions.
